Mediating Effect of Gratitude on the Relationship between Life Stress and Depression

Abstract
Purpose: This study examined the mediating effects of gratitude on the relationship between life stress and depression in nursing students.

Methods: The participants were 181 nursing students recruited from 2 universities in B and D cities in South Korea. Baron and Kenny's regression method and the Sobel test were employed to analyze the mediating effects of gratitude on the association between life stress and depression, via the SPSS/WIN 18.0 program.

Results: The participants¡¯ mean depression score was 9.58, and there were significant differences in depression according to perceived interpersonal relationships and perceived physical health statue. In addition, gratitude exerted partial mediating effects on the relationship between life stress and depression.

Conclusion: This study indicated gratitude as factors managing depression in nursing students. Based on the results of this study, strategies to increase nursing students¡¯ gratitude are highly recommended for management of their depression.
